Why some interactive websites ask for entering image verification code while registering or posting a msg.?

Some interactive websites like online forums or social networking sites ask for entering an image verification code while registering or posing a msg. They say that they do it for blocking spam. How spam msg. are blocked in this way?

computer spams are very intelligent(now a days..), they can rip your mail and search for text and number and combinations and deliver this info to their creators... but if it is an image there is no chance that an automated system can recognize the letters and numbers embedded into that image.. still they don't have eyes and ears like we do... right?... lets hope they will not have those facilities in the future even....

bye..
Reply:*hi,

These types of image verification code is made so that automated bots will not access them. A computer code or a program can do so many things and with less time, it there is such a program to create accounts, then site will find it very difficult to maintain the site and everything will be dis-organized.

So, image verification code is kept to see if there is a person on the other end, who can read and type the code.

But now-a-days programs can be made to break the image verification code automatically, i.e. the bots can be programmed to answer for the image verification code.

Let's see how then will they stop the attack.
Reply:The spam bots cannot read those types of images (humans barely even can =/), but they do it so bots don't go around posting spam.
Reply:iT STOPS MACHINES (Spam Bots)
Reply:This is so the system makes sure you are a real person and not an internet "bot" short for robot some call them web spiders as well.

It is often used to keep bot's from overwhelming a web site with spam.
