What is your opinion of the " eStop Act" being talked about in Albany?....?

"The eStop Act- Electronic Security and Targeting of Online Predators- was crafted by Andrew Cuomo aimed to tighten the leash of sexual predators who troll the Internet to seduce minors.

Offenders would have to list all e-mail addresses, chat and instant messaging names, screen names and pages they've created on social networking sites. Those failing to report changes of their Internet identities within 10 days could be charged with a felony. "

The information would then be passed on to sites like MySpace. What are your thoughts regarding this proposal?

My thoughts are when are parents going to accept responsibility for what their kids are up to in the first place? Kids get into those situations because they are vulnerable. It is tragic, but enough is enough when we expect the government to enter our personal lives in more and more ways to take care of what should be family business.

I think the predators are drastically immoral, but have we asked the government to close down the Catholic Church to protect children from molesters in that organization?

It is a heavy topic.
Reply:That's what I call a "warm fuzzy" law - it gives the electorate the warm fuzzies; makes them think that the world will be a utopia now that predators cannot get away with their crimes.

What occurs to me in watching "Catch a Predator" is that some percentage of the guys they catch have been getting away with what they're doing for quite a while. That means there are underage girls out there who are engaging in this stuff WAY more than most of us know about.

Can you say "dysfunctional families"? I thought so!
Reply:Prima Facie unconstituional, going nowhere fast.

Plus the data so collected would be nonsensical, and not usable for any purpose.

Surely no internet company would accept the responsibility, let alone regulation, of relying on such data in order to avoid liability.

so, if such a thing goes into effect, expect companies to move out of new yourk, and change the terms of service for their new york members.
Reply:It would be really hard to enforce but if there was a way to it would be a good idea. Someone needs to stop the freaks who pray on children.
Reply:This is an example of political stupidity created by arrogant politicians to fool voters into thinking they are doing something of value. This kind of an idiotic bill will have no effect on anybody and is utterly worthless. Does anyone seriously think that a predator is going to comply with this nonsense? And besides that, how would anyone be able to prove compliance one way or the other? E-mail address and screen names and IDs can be changed at the drop of a hat, so this type of legistlation is not only moronic it is just plain dumb.
