Has anyone seen this??

AUSTIN, Texas -- A 14-year-old girl who says she was sexually assaulted by another user of MySpace.com sued the social networking Web site Monday, claiming it does not take sufficient steps to protect underage members.

The girl says a 19-year-old man lied in his profile about being a senior on a football team to gain her trust and phone number.

Pete Solis was arrested in May on a charge of sexual assault of a child. He could not immediately be reached Monday evening.

The suit alleges that MySpace has "absolutely no meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage users."

"(MySpace) has got to take this seriously," said attorney Carl Barry, who is representing the girl and her mother. The suit seeks $30 million.

In a statement, MySpace said it is committed to the safety of its members.

"We take aggressive measures to protect our members," said Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer. "Ultimately, Internet safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone on the Internet to engage in smart Web practices and have open family dialogue about how to apply offline lessons in the online world."

Has anyone seen this??
I'm not surprised. It's not Myspaces fault. It's dumb parents faults who let their kids on the site. The parents should be educating their kids about internet safety. Sadly enough, the girl sort of got what she deserved for trusting someone she never met.
Reply:yea thats completely stoopid!!!!

their parents should be responsible for that kind of stuff

parents know what is out there and some of them dont care to tell their children to not give their info out over the internet

but it is ridiculous to sue for 30 million dollars

thats insane!!
Reply:that is a risk everyone has to take when getting on sites like myspace...hell... even here on yahoo people will do that and that is another reason you never try to date or get into a relationship like that online. if you ask me it sounds like the parents fault for not monitoring what the kid does online
Reply:yup

i dont have a myspace and wont ever get one

my brother's friend's sister was almost kidnapped cus of myspace

this guy who she thought was her age came to her school and said he was supposed to pick her up that day. he claimed he was the new babaysitter her mom just hired. but when she was leaving the police can and arrested the guy. And the girl was about 12/13 years old.
Reply:anyone who gives out their email addresses to strangers is stupid and should not be allowed to use a computer.
Reply:Oh please. You know, I was 5 minutes late to work today because I was stopped by a train. I think I will file a lawsuit against the railroad and the engineer for causing me undue stress and preventing me from doing my job.

This wonderful country is becoming the most litigious nation ever. Americans will sue at the drop of a hat for anything. No one, and I mean no one, is safe from this foolishness. Let's take some responsibility and act like grownups, folks, and stop all the silly frivolous lawsuits that waste taxpayers' money.
Reply:yesa i saw it and heard it this morning. and your point? we all know myspace is sleeezy. my neices were on there but mom put stop to that cuz you could tell by the way they'd down-size whatever when they were on puter that they were up to no good. its a bad place for kids.
Reply:Why is it people who are too dumb not go give information away and who are desperate enough to even talk to losers have the guts to try and profit from their mistakes. Her mistake started when she got on the Internet. Too bad for her and leave the net out of it. If you do not look for trouble you will not find it. Anyone dumb enough to give personal information to strangers deserves what they get.
Reply:*sigh* It was to be expected.
Reply:yup that is why i dont even mess w/myspace.....
Reply:The 14 year old girl shouldn't be giving her number to a 19 year old boy anyway!
Reply:I am sure that the Lawyers had the big $ signs in their eyes, and helped come up with the ridiculous amount of money. If it is not about the "$", then I would like to see ALL of the money collected, if "MySpace" loses, be donated to educate parents on how to raise responsible children. I think this whole lawsuit is backwards. MySpace should sue the girl and her parents, for the "negative" light shed upon THEM. That is the way I see it, if any lawsuit should be pursued at all! I also think our tax dollars could be well spent elsewhere!
Reply:There is no way that Myspace is responsible for anything that happened to that girl. Myspace is not bad, its all in what you make of it. I have a myspace page and nothing bad has ever happened to me because I am smart enough not to give out personal info.
