I lost touch with some friends I met from Ireland and I remember they said they used a social network, but don't know which one! Thanks for your help.

How do online social networks make a profit?

I am curious to know how social networks make a profit, by advertising or by what means

How do online social networks make a profit?
I believe most of the profit has to do with selling ad space to advertisers, so if you're already feeling jovial while chatting or browsing pictures, you'll click on their ad bar and go to their site (and hopefully buy). That's what allows a lot of free webhosting as well: Joe Schmoe can have his own website for free if he signs up with a company, and that company allows other advertisers a little place on Joe's individual site. (thus giving Joe the profit of a free site, and the company the ad profits which in turn partially fund the costs of hosting).

Social dating sites like Match.com and EHarmony.com of course charge membership fees, and I think they probably sell ad space too. It seems like those little sidebars are everywhere.
Reply:all free service profit oriented sites earn money from advertising. but the requirement is to have tons of traffic daily. advertiser will come in when they find any sites that has high traffic volume. internet is about competition and better services. so don't expect to earn money just by making one. 5-10% of these site would make money. it is the nature of human beings, stay with the best. all the not so best will die down and perish.
Reply:Advertising and the personal information you provide gets sold to companies and political parties.
Reply:They don't.

This is a crucial fact to realize: despite multi-billion dollar sales of "social networking web site" companies, none of these companies makes a profit.

Revenue comes primarily through advertising, including "sponsorships." I am not aware of any "information sales" (such as selling your registration data to companies or political parties) but that's certainly possible, if permitted by the company's privacy policy.

Have any of you fellow seniors joined seniorocity.com (the adult social networking community)?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience on Seniorocity. http://www.seniorocity.com/

It seems like a great concept--an online social networking community for adults and seniors, like a facebook or myspace--but solely for older folks.

Anyway, I think I'm going to go ahead and join.

Have any of you fellow seniors joined seniorocity.com (the adult social networking community)?
I've joined and it is a very cool and full featured site. It's very easy to setup a blog, create groups and forums, they have helpful links to various sources of information for older adults, articles, and the list goes on.

Based on my Emails back and forth with them they are really looking for the members to set the overall direction for the site, though they are trying to provide gentle pushes.

I give them a big thumbs up.

I need an approximate number of online social networks one can find on the internet. I would prefer something scholarly based, but simply a number should do fine too.

Try Bebo or Myspace or Facebook
Reply:Most people are addicted to Facebook right now.
Reply:Seeing from your profile that you're over 40, try Seniorocity. You won't be disappointed.

Unlike Facebook and MySpace, it's designed for the over 40 crowd/baby boomers. This is important because you won't get innundated by teens and you can meet other interesting folks throughout the world.

The community there is very friendly and helpful. I joined several weeks ago and don't regret it one bit.

Hopefully, I'll see you over there!

Social Networking, and Free Communities Online?

When researching a Social Networking community that offers services and account setups for free what is it that you would like to know before signing up? What features do you look for? and If it's family oriented is that a turn off?

Buddhist online social networks?

Are there any online Buddhist social networks

or websites where you can ask experienced Buddhist meditators questions about your meditation practise?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Buddhist online social networks?
Beliefnet has a pretty extensive variety of Buddhist forums. There are different types of what is considered "Buddhist" meditation. I mean, basically, you can put them all into one of two basic categories - Vipassana or Samatha (Samadhi). Eventually each gets you to the same place...actually any religions's meditative tradition (as long as it is truly meditation) will get you to the same place. EEGs have shown similar to identical patterns regardless of religious practice. There's really no way anyone can "teach" you how to meditate especially since if they tell you too much, you won't have certain insights for yourself. It takes a LOT of practice and a lot of committment because you won't see much difference for a pretty long time. (I think I spend the first two or three years I meditated thinking, "Am I doing this right?" Other people may notice differences in you before you do. More calm, more balanced, more focused...

Why do filipinos go online and join social networking sites?

Hi everyone! im having a thesis about social networking in the Philippines. Your answers will be a big help. Thanks!

Why do filipinos go online and join social networking sites?
Becuase they want a Green Card from the US. Every single one of them i talked too told me thats what htey wanted...
Reply:Chops, speak for your own mother, all US women are not greedy and only what, what, want. it is true, women from the Philippines are looking for a way to get into the USA, so i would say that women on those kinds of dating networks, sites, are preying on men who are maybe a bit naive and vulnerable and lets face it, unattractive. I mean put yourself in there shoes, if u wanted out of someplace so bad, and one of the only ways to get out was to kiss butt to some fat Joe sitting behind a PC? It is deffo a 2 way street here.

Also it is not only Philippine women that do this. I have heard about Russian polish and some people in africa trying the same thing.
Reply:A friend of mine in the U.S. actually got 'involved' with several different filipino ladies online. He asked them all this same question. Many of the women were looking for a way out of the Phillipines, hoping to come to the U.S. where many of their friends have gone--that and the men in their lives were basically lazy and insisted on the women doing all the work to support them...at least that was the overall consensus. Right or wrong here, it makes sense. Filipino women are very beautiful and very loyal. This truly appeals to U.S. men as many here are fed up with women here who have all but lost the ability to give to a relationship. All U.S. women seem to want is to know what they can GET. So you have a 2 way street here. U.S. men like what the filipino women are offering and the filipino women like the idea of having a loving, stable relationship in the U.S.

Do you think that social networking online is breaking down?

face to face human interactions

Do you think that social networking online is breaking down?
As a society we are going through the growing pains of how to do it right. We know that just because we can get people all together we can't make them all get along.

In some ways social networking on the computer has hurt us, in others it helps.

I think it's just trade offs, I can talk to more people with less effort, expanding my horizons and meet people I would have never met otherwise. As a consequence I don't actually meet people face to face, I don't know their mannerisms, also it's easier to be rude and indifferent to people that are only just pictures or words on a screen.
Reply:No, I do not believe that is true.

Is there a social networking online community for Hawaii?

I am looking for a website that's sort of like an online community for Hawaii. The topics can range from best restaurants to best beach spots for surfing. Basically, I want to hear what people in Hawaii have to say about anything Hawaii. I want to learn about Hawaii from the locals.

Is there a social networking online community for Hawaii?
Yes, there is a Hawaii online community. It is a discussion forum that talks about things ranging from Hawaii beaches to Hawaii food. Users write reviews about things that are Hawaii. The URL is:

It is still new, but it should be great once it gets going. You can read and write reviews on surf spots, good restaurants, night clubs, etc...

It's mostly about visiting and living on or moving to the Big Island, but people will answer your questions about other islands, too.

Is any1 else sick of social online networking like hi5 and myspace?superficial, self pleasuring masturbation.?

Dang never heard of that last one, is it any good? Sounds kinda intresting of what they may do with that lol. On the other hand(pardon the pun) depending on what they do it sounds kinda sick. You know say they do a bad job of seperating the mens section and womens section and you see something you REALLY don't want to see. Ok sorry I'm getting a little sick by my own thoughts of that darn I'm avoiding that sight. As to the ones like myspace yeah I'm tired of them. People need a life. I mean seriously people go to sites like that just to get as many people as they can to add them. They aren't using it to keep in touch with friends.

What are substitutes to online social networking?

Life! Online can be fun but there is no substitute for just leaving the house and meeting people. Interacting with society! But its best not to leave home with that in mind. You should go out to do something, even if it's just working in the yard or shopping or going to a baseball game.

The rest will come.

What are substitutes to online social networking?
This answer is just to allow you to vote.

How does online social networking enhance a person's effective writing skills?

Online social networking often hurts writing skills. I say this because people often shorten their words to say time and this isn't a good habit.

How does online social networking enhance a person's effective writing skills?
From everything I have seen, it only harms effective writing skills and communication skills in general. Social networking encourages people to use incorrect spelling and no grammar in order to make messages short. These are both detrimental to effective writing skills. Texting is also detrimental to effective communication skills since it divorces the parties involved from the most effective clues to effective communicaton, ie; body language, intonation and facial clues.
Reply:I would have to say that I think it does. While it's now socially acceptable to use abbreviated language to text or chat on line, there are many times when that just can't happen. Taking on line classes enhances effective writing skills as you certainly can not post an ill written document to express your thoughts.

Are gay online social networking sites replacing gay bars?

Feels like more and more people prefer meeting others on the web compared to say 10 years ago... What do you think?

Are gay online social networking sites replacing gay bars?
You can't dance on a web site.
Reply:Where the social networking sites are working is with people that are in rural areas. They are "connected" to the gay lifestyle, and can meet "local" people they might not otherwise find.

Working in a STD clinic I find that more of the clients are meeting their partners on line, and sad to say it has increased the STD/HIV rates a lot.

But people need to be in social settings and the bars will never be replaced for that reason. In fact one of our bars has a Sunday afternoon for the "one line" people to meet and get to socialize in the real work, not cyber space, and it has been very successful.
Reply:I don't think so. The bars are just as packed as they were 10 or even 20 years ago.

People still need the real world.
Reply:There will always be bars! It is where real people really meet. Online meetings only give you the illusion of being someone else. How many of us have embellished who we are or what we really do online, only to be busted later, a large majority. When it comes down to it where do most of us set up meetings for online contacts? at the clubs mostly. The Internet is great for chatting and what not, but clubs/bars will be around for a long time. They are a "constant," like church, groceries stores, they are a mainstay of community gatherings.
Reply:No i don't think so...Networking sites are used primarily to meet new guys and to date...gay bars are to go out and have a good time
Reply:i hate english
Reply:For dating, I was more for online... For having fun, drinking, and dancing the bar... But I never picked anyone up from the bar. I always knew of the 3 week relationships from the bars... So I just went there to have fun, not really meet anyone...
Reply:I don't think gay online networking sites are REPLACING bars. I just think it's another venue to meet people, socialize, and (for some people) hook up.

I do think, however, that there ARE those who don't enjoy going to bars, so online networking is probably a welcomed replacement for them.

Bars will always be popular, because it's a place to see, be seen, drink, dance, meet friends, and have fun.

What are online social networking groups?

i need a good, valid definition for my research paper. any suggestions? i know what they are i just need a definition. (ex. MySpace, Friendster, Facebook)

What are online social networking groups?
Made by individuals and/or organizations, online social networking groups are used by many to socialize, discuss, debate, etc... from the comfort of their own computer. It is also used to meet new people.

This is my definition. I'm not sure. Use it if you like :)

Does online social networking enhance an individual’s critical thinking and effective writing skills?

Haha, no. Think about the subject normally discussed in online social settings-- dating, flirting, etc.

Also, think about the language used when chatting online (a/s/l, LOL, brb, ttfn, omg, bff, rotflol, :) , ttyl, b/c, n, and using z to replace other letters in words). This does NOT foster good writing and spelling skills.

Also, most people pay no attention to using good grammar or complete sentences when typing online, so the only effect it might have would be a negative effect.

Does online social networking enhance an individual’s critical thinking and effective writing skills?
LOL liek it tottaly helps with crtikal thinking and writing skilz!!!1 It takes major thinking to comment on the latest gossip at school and how am i going to leave teh comment without using writing skillz??? cant you see i am already improvin my writin skillz with all this practise!!1

BUT on a serious note, I did find an article that mentiones how blogging can be benificial to the classroom. This may be because bloggin is slightly more formal than your standard myspace page. Another difference with a blog is that the blogger gets comments on what he writes, unlike a social networking site where perhaps only the person the comment is addressed to gives a response

I was unfortunatly unable to find anything with benifical views on social networking towards your goals.
Reply:Absolutely. Think of it. We're now using critical thinking in a debate over whether online social networking enhances an individual's critical thinking. It also enhances writing skills because we wouldn't be able to get our point across if we couldn't communicate effectively.
Reply:I disagree with your other answers. Of course it helps with your critical effective writing skills if you apply yourself. Don't be lazy with the (lol) bull. Give it your best shot and do your best. To heck with the other trash thrown your way.

Anyone know any good online family social networking sites to manage busy schedules?

Anyone know any good family social networking sites that allows me to share calendars, to-do lists, reminders etc. Basically I am looking for a one stop free online service that helps you easily plan, schedule, and manage all the things busy families do. I want a web based service that I can access anywhere and not something that I have to download.

I have looked at several sites but I didn't like it for one reason or another:

Famster (too complicated and fancy)

Cozi (the closest one to what I want but there seems to be no proper reminder system and the web version is not good enough)

Airset (too complicated and not user friendly)

Famundo (I like it but you have to pay for it)

Cingo (you have to pay for it, and I don't need a portal type site)

If need be, I'll pay for something but not without knowing there are NO good alternatives out there.

Anyone know any good online family social networking sites to manage busy schedules?
Yahoo calendar is the best online reminders, and free, but i'm not familiar with these kind of internet reminders, i like Jingle, Rockrose Jingle, a desktop reminder ...

"Orkut" ..... How many of u are members in Orkut...the online social networking community ?

Orkut is good but just like any other online community nowadays, it has lots of disadvantages/cons. For asking questions and getting satisfactory answers from any category I think 'Yahoo Answers' is much better than 'Orkut'...if u know there are Communities in Orkut where u can join and post topics (questions etc.). What are ur opinions ??

"Orkut" ..... How many of u are members in Orkut...the online social networking community ?
I had an Orkut account when it was very new (happened to get an invite from probably not to many layers from the original group of people that joined). I ended up deleting it because I would get spam messages in my inbox and people who were my friends had friends that were a bit too far out there and it probably would have cast a bad light on me. I wish I had more control over who I showed as my friends on my public page versus having a private page that I could do that on. I like Xanga in the fact that it lets you limit how much the users can participate with you. Yes you lose a lot of the point of the whole networking idea but you can make friends out in the real world too (actually better then in the online world and they are better and more trusting friends in general, also more stable and sound in their resoning and logic).
Reply:Orkurt is funny, because when you visit , orkurt of somebody else, this people get knowing

Do some of you find online social networking/messaging kinda pretentious/weird?

i know it's ironic to be asking that here, but do some of you find online communication (other than normal email) kinda weird and prententious? i'm mostly talking about message boards, forums, chat rooms. and also facebook, myspace. or maybe it's about all the information on there that people tend to give at times. i mean it's good to keep in touch with friends, but otherwise??

i dunno why, but i feel that a normal phone call, email, snail mail, or just hanging out beats any of those

or if you know the person well enough, just stopping by and saying hi!

Do some of you find online social networking/messaging kinda pretentious/weird?
I really don't see some of that stuff as weird. Because sometimes its healthy to meet new people that aren't always in your own area. But I think the extent to which some people go with it is dramatically unhealthy. I mean MySpace is the biggest one for sure. That place is so high school with the way people act on there. Meaning that boyfriends and girlfriends are thinking of breaking up and stuff over something someone said off of myspace. I mean hello, the other person probably doesn't even know that guy or girl for real. So why even ****** about any comments they make? Seems very senseless and trivial to me. As for some forums and chatrooms are cool. But I hate how someone has been going to a site for so long and they get to be a semi top person on the forum or chatroom and they think they can tell others what to do. I mean I was catching a bit of hell from some chick on a forum for a show I watched a few times. I had a few good questions that I asked and I felt were important enough for me to determine if the show was worth watching. But she got on my case saying just watch the rest of the episodes and don't try to get your questions answered here. I responded back and said this is the frequently asked question section here and I see alot dumber questions on here than my own. She totally had nothing to say after that . But still I know what you mean. I feel if you are in close contact with friends and stuff you should be able to pick up a phone or visit them. I know texting isn't an official social network but I know people that do this all the time and they are like living right next to the person. That is very weird to me too. I sort of dislike it too, because there is so much short hand you have to do and find out where allt he symbols and stuff are when doing it. I rather not waste my time trying to type on the phone and just dial up the person's number instead.

P.S. I totally agree with the too much info thing as well. I feel people put too much of it out there on Myspace and other such places and that is how whackos start feel like they know you and are a part of your life because they read all of what you are saying and put up on the site. Its a sure fire way for folks to get stalked for sure.

Does the use of online social networking tools, (IM, MySpace, Facebook, etc…) make teens more or less social?

Are teens still learning the skills they need to function "properly" in an offline social situation otherwise known as “The Real World?”

Does the use of online social networking tools, (IM, MySpace, Facebook, etc…) make teens more or less social?
Depends on the person, some use it to make new friends in "Real life" others just make online friends.

How can i start an online social networking? I have an idea for one, but don't know who to contact?

I know the audience i want to target..

The programming that it needs.

(css,mysql...etc)

But I don't know where to start.

I build other social networking from websites like ning before,

And I had a great amount of members and great traffic.

I want to take this social networking to the new level.

I just need a few help.

How can i start an online social networking? I have an idea for one, but don't know who to contact?
Yeah,

Your on the right track. I have a social networking community, directed towards fun and family.

You do need the MySql Database and php pages to make it interactive.

So I guess now the question your asking is where can you find the software to get your foot off the ground and started in the right direction.

First have a look at my community, look at the options that it gives you, http://www.bettermember.net

The softeware I use is simple machines or SMF. It's pretty cool and comes with a very easy to use back office. I'll post the link for you in the sources section here.

I hope this was helpful,

Jim
Reply:Hello.

Well basically, you don't really have to contact somebody, but personally, I suggest you to do.

So to start up the netoworking, you will need to cade they system. It is not really hard, personally I could make one, just lazy to do so :p

You will need to use the following languages:

html

css

php

sql

javascript

xml (quite optional)

ajax (optional but useful. it is basically javascript + xml)

With these languages you will basically design it and put the whole system to work. However, there are already some huge networks out ther such as MySpace, hi5, bebo etc.. Now to make your network to stand out there, you need to promote it. Start by contacting all of your friends to sign up, then they will tell their friends and so on. Pay some money to put your net on Google AdSense.

Also, sometihng that you might have a problem with is webspace. See, in social netoworks, people can upload their images, videos and music. And using a normal webhost (even at their best plan) won't provide you with unlimited webspace. For that, I suggest you to contact a few local companies and tell them about your social netowork then offer them to advertise them in exchange for money. Now with that money, buy a delicated server. Just one would be ok for staerting up, but if you go big, you will of course have to buy a new one and so on.

So anyway, hope I helped. For any questions then email me.

See ya around ;)

Is online social networking becoming a problem?

A few years ago, the problem was people stalking children over the internet when they went into chatrooms, but now that chatrooms are apparently more secure, there is a new craze which personally, i think is worse, social networking websites such as MySpace have millions of members, i am concerned about the percentage of paedophiles that could easily access this website and just as easily befriend people, it makes me sick, these sites are easy to sign up for, but you may find yourself becoming vulnerable. I know the parent of the child should behold responsibility for the use of the internet by the child, but are we supposed to wrap our children up in cotton wool?

I would appreciate any views

Is online social networking becoming a problem?
I have 4 children, ages 7 through 16,and I keep both of our computers in 'public' areas of our home,so I can check what they are doing.I have taught them common sense when it comes to strangers, and hope they make good choices. That is really all you can do with teens.

Having said that,I would enjoy castrating all paedophiles.
Reply:No. You just teach them not to be stupid and not to post personal information on the internet, and not to go meet with strangers they met over the internet.

Pedophiles found victims plenty easily enough without the internet. Common sense erradicates most reason for caution. Instill that in your children, and monitor them when they're young.

Frankly, the problem today is that the media makes a big deal out of every bad thing that ever happens. Millions of people have myspace profiles. The vast majority are neither victims nor predators. Today's media simply makes it seem like the big evil is lurking around the corner, and everyone grows paranoid and overreacts.

A few years before chatrooms, the problem was the park, or the mall, or the beach. There's /always/ been a problem. Right now, the media is focusing on social networking. Actually, social networking has made it easier to catch the pedophiles - as sting operations are much simpler to set up online, where the predator can't see that the 'victim' is actually a police officer posting photos of a teenager, and not a teenager itself.

Hence, more are being caught than ever before. This doesn't mean that they're more dangerous than before, or that there are more /of/ them that before. It simply means that we're catching them easier.
Reply:Wrapping your child in cotton wool doesn't teach them how to stay safe. You need to actually sit with them and teach them. There are plenty of sites that promote child safety. Visit them with your kids. Once you explain to kids why there are rules - to keep you safe - they get it.

Websites don't give paedos access to children. Children giving out their personal details and arranging a meet would give them access; but it seems less risky to me than playing in the park. The internet is not face to face.

The internet is used by all sorts of nasty individuals. Thieves, liars, stalkers, people who want something from you.

If you don't like a site then don't use it! Its legal, its not a hardcore porn site, and its daft to ban it just because a percentage misuse it.

We wouldn't do anything if we let people like that dictate out lives to us.

I'm looking for a potential partner to start an online social networking site. Any ideas where to search?

I'm starting an online social networking niche site and I'm looking for a potential partner with a good internet/computer and business background who would be interested in helping me launch and build a successful business. Anyone know of any sources online to advertise for such a person? I'm not trying to hire someone. I'm looking for someone to partner which means 50/50 contribution. The site is nearly built, but I need someone with a more business background to take it to the next level.

Why MySpace and Facebook? (a question about online social networking)?

Do you have an account on an Online Social Networking Website (i.e. MySpace, Facebook, Xanga, etc.) if so, W-H-Y? What are the advantages/disadvantages?

Why MySpace and Facebook? (a question about online social networking)?
MySpace - photo comments

Friendster - main purpose is to add more friends.

Facebook - to keep in touch with 'real' friends

Hi5 - similar copy of friendster with different name.

Xanga - featured profile of getting to know a person deeper.

Bebo - Similar to hi5 and friendster

Multiply - to communicate by sharing photos with friends

Yahoo! 360- Something like Xanga

DeviantArt - for art lovers where great pictures are posted and commented.
Reply:I do not have MySpace but I have Facebook.

I think that with either, you have to be careful. A bit more careful than writing emails, but a bit less careful than buying things online. it all comes down to how much information you are willing to share with people. The more information you share with friends, the more info that "others" can see also. That's the case with anything, just like Facebook and MySpace.

However, it appears that Facebook has a better way of hiding info from those that are not your friends. I have clicked on people's MySpace profiles and I dont even have a MySpace account! In Facebook, you have to LOG IN FIRST. Then, they can still decide not to let you see their profile if they choose to.

The benefits? It's the lazy man's way of keeping in touch with people you know casually and wouldnt otherwise call or email. You can see up to date pics of them, if they choose to share them. You can see a phone number change, and email address change, their current occupation, their other friends, etc. without even having to request it from them or them having to send out a broadcast email to all their friends.

Also, you can get back in touch with people you haven't seen in years! Which is what I have done so easily through Facebook, considering I have lived in 5 diff states and 2 diff countries!

It's good to take the pros from it and stay away from the cons. Be smart and safe, and you'll enjoy it!
Reply:I have a myspace account. Through myspace, I was able to connect with several people I had lost touch with. See, I grew up and went to school in Indiana, and moved to Mississippi after high school. No real disadvantages that I have encountered. My stepdad got a computer virus from myspace though... You just have to be smart and be careful. Only communicate with people that you know personally, or it can get out of control.
Reply:myspace and xanga don't appear too safe..so no to that..

but facebook is pretty decent..and its a good way to keep in touch with people you don't see regularly.

you have to ofcourse be careful.

but for me, i've gotten in touch with people from elementary school again and so thats pretty cool.
Reply:I hardly use my facebook, and I use Myspace a few times a week to add new photos, and chat with friends
Reply:Put simply, as stupid as they may seem, they are sometimes the only way to keep in touch with friends. Mostly, I use them as ways to keep in touch with friends in college. One of my friends is a friend in Virginia who ONLY has a Myspace and only replies to it, which is frustrating, but I love my friends.

And I am careful online, so I don't add people left and rights. My online areas are friends only for a reason.

Why do you think ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES are a trend today?

Why do you think Online Social Networking sites are such a big trend today? (sites like MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Xanga, and LiveJournal)

Why do you think ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES are a trend today?
Because more and more people are starting to connect to the internet from home. It's a good way to keep in touch with friends and family. More and more people sit in front of computers everyday, looking to be entertained. Social networks provide a comfortable entertaining atmosphere that you can access just about anytime that you are at home as long as you have an internet connection. And than you can connect from other places, check your mail on there, meet new people, learn new things, observe media, and lots of other things that are entertaining.
Reply:Because people want to connect with other people, which makes them feel important. It's also a VERY convenient way to keep in touch with everyone without having to spend a lot of time or energy. I think another reason is because we as individuals want to be noticed. Doing blogs, social networks, and other sharing websites allows us to do that.

Is hanging out on online social networking sites REALLY a social life for some people?

I prefer to meet people in the external world. I've never had any interest in becoming a member of online social networking sites where you add digital friends. For the younger folks in their teens and 20s, it's fine, but I can't imagine those in their 30s and up spending so much time when there's a beautiful world waiting outside for real life mixing and mingling. What is everyone's thoughts?

Is hanging out on online social networking sites REALLY a social life for some people?
If they want to whatever...it does not matter to me because I'm not one of them (thank God)....sadly though I do know some...and not be mean but it seems pathetic, doesn't it?Unless there is a very good reason, like you work in a cubical, then it's understandable, I guess I'd be adding digital friends to my page as well.
Reply:No, it's an anti-social life for some people.
Reply:you seem to be doing a nice job. Smile and be happy!

Do you think online social networking helps socialise us in the real world?

Do you think online social networking helps socialise us in the real world?

As people are spending more and more time on the likes of bebo and myspace, do you think this affects them socially? Or does it help them learn more about the world?

Do you think online social networking helps socialise us in the real world?
Yes and no. I think that the internet is a free, safe space for people to express themselves; To find likeminded people that are interested in what they are interested. It makes the world smaller in some sense. But I think the internet has a lot of negative aspects as well. I makes younger teenagers vulnerable to predators and it makes some mature much faster. I think over all the internet is really an amazing resource. People from far away places meet and fall in love... or people who never would have crossed paths before from just across the block are meeting to make new friends or start new social groups. I really think that it does fulfull some of a person's need to socialize (almost like that social meter in the Sims), but it isn't a true subsitute for in person, face to face interaction.
Reply:Not really. Online one can express ones fantasies or speak freely on subjects that they normally cannot say in the real world, without facing any consequences. Once out in the real world, they revert to their usual behavior. On the other hand, people socializing on the internet can learn what others r thinking in regards to the subject being discussed and this is good, but as far as changing ones personality, I don`t think social networking matters. You are what you are.
Reply:if one lived on their todd, it would become their only outlet
Reply:It helps but theres no better way than to go for a coffee or a pint and have a good ole chinwag. Online chat is cool but don't forget that its as good as long as theres something to talk about but if your out in a pub then the atmosphere is great and you'll find more to chat about.
Reply:It can enhance existing friendships int he social world because the Internet makes it easier to keep in touch with friends even if you're not int he same country. you can share photos and read blogs. I think that a lot of friendships would have been lost if it wasn't for the Internet, for example, I probably wouldn't still be in regular contact with my friends from uni who have mover away or overseas. It has even re-started lost friendships through friends reunited.
Reply:Yes, I do believe that the Internet helps us learn more about the world. It is great to have endless amounts of information at our fingertips. I do think that people can become more distant if they socialize online only.
