Has anyone been victim of identity theft as result of posting details on internet or a social networking site?

A friend who works in finance recently told me how easy it was for people to steal your identity using details posted online. I have used Friends Reunited in the past (you can choose what you say, of course) and Face Book (which I thought was relatively secure). I've since thought twice about the whole thing based on his advice. Has anybody every had any problems or bad experiences?

You always have to be csreful about any information you post anywhere about yourself.

I was a 'victim' of identity fraud about 14 years ago, before it was commonplace, thanks to British Gas continuing to send through stuff in my name despite them also sending it to my new address, as instructed.
Reply:ANYTHING upon anything is unfair game once you connect your computer to the inter net. That is why it is absolutely IMPERATIVE to have a firewall installed and encryption software installed on your computer to encrypt your private folders, data, and and as much personal information as you can. It is also imperative you have anti spy ware and anti virus installed and up to date to ward off programs that can spy and key log you. This is all BEFORE you voluntarily post information about you, your friends, and your family on social sites. You have just taken a lot of the leg work out of those who wish you ill will by voluntarily posting details about your life. It really is the 'wild west' out there on the net where anything goes. You just have to have the better protection to ward off attacks from the bad people.
